The broad bean, also known as the fava bean, has been found to go back as far as 6000BC when it was thought to be discovered in North Africa and the south of Asia, making it one of the oldest plants cultivated by humans. The broad bean is a large flat green bean or pulse and is commonly used in salad dishes.

The broad bean is popular all around the world and is an incredibly versatile ingredient used in a variety of dishes. They are particularly popular in vegan and vegetarian dishes as the bean is a great source of protein, vitamins, fibre, antioxidants, and folate and with their low number of calories and low-fat contents they are thought to have great health benefits, making them the perfect ingredient in diet and health foods.

Process

Uren’s broad beans are grown and sourced from our accredited suppliers across the globe and can even be traced back to the field. Broad beans are generally eaten while still young, enabling harvesting to begin as early as spring, but even the main crop sown in early spring will be ready from mid to late summer.

Once the broad beans have been harvested, they are taken back to a factory where they are washed, de-shelled, and thoroughly checked for defects. The beans are then flash-frozen at extremely low temperatures to stop the formation of ice crystals, ensure maximum freshness, and maintain a free-flowing product.
