A whole day dedicated to the mango known as “the King of Fruits” in India; the mango is an intrinsic part of India’s culture. The mango as well as being the national fruit of India, Pakistan, and the Philippines the mango tree is the national tree of Bangladesh.
The mango has a long tradition in India, first cultivated there 5000 years ago and taken to Southeast Asia between the 5th and 4th centuries BC; in the 10th Century AD it was cultivated in East Africa.
The mango grows in frost-free tropical climates. India can lay claim to supplying almost half the world’s mango, China being the second largest source. 20 Million tonnes of Mangoes are grown annually. Other growing areas of Mangoes include the Philippines, Jamaica, Australia, Mexico, Peru, Ecuador, Brazil, Guatemala, and Haiti.
There is an international mango Festival held every year in Delhi where over 50 mango growers from across the country attend and compete with everything related to mangoes including mango cuisine showcasing the many different mango varieties (there are over 500).
